Description

Answer the following questions as if you were giving advice to a student teacher.
How would I introduce a discussion of my approach
to instructional design?

I would explain to the student teacher what instructional design is. Then I would proceed to explainn /demonstrate the steps I take
.
What are my resources
for designing units and
lessons?

I review the pacing guide and standards for the subject to be taught. The guide allows me to know when specific items are to be introduced and the standards enable to see the specific piece to be taught. I expand on the subject and data later.
What do I generally
do first?

First I pick the subject, ex. Science. Then I review the pacing guide to see what part of the subject is scheduled to be taught at that time of the year. Next, I will review the standards to guide me towards the specifics of the subject and to find out what the end result of my lesson/unit will be.
How do I interact with
the standards?

I try to only use them as a guide for me, but I must use them in my lesson plan that is given to my principal to show that I have looked at them to identify what my kids CAN do at the end of the lesson.
What are my constraints
and how do I respond
to them?

I would say my largest constraint is what I do not know, therefore being creative enough to teach it in an interesting way. I respond to this constraint by delving deeply into something I may not know or only know slightly, and then find an interesting way to present.
How do I approach
student assessment?

I initially do a written pre-assessment that will include mostly what they hopefully learned/were taught the prior year or will include the basics of the subject. Then depending on the length of the lesson, may do a weekly assessment on what was taught that week if it is a long unit, and if it is short I will assess what they have learned using requirements of the standards. At the end of the unit/lesson, I will initiate a written post-assessment guided by what the standards said they need to learn. the written assessments are fairly standard. There might be non-written assessments for subjects such as reading or language arts.
